Scam Alert Channel: Product Assembly Scams
Product assembly jobs are among the most
commonly offered home-based business
opportunities. The advertisements for these jobs
are often colorful and appealing, explaining to
the potential employee that no special skills
are needed to do the work, and that the steady
paycheck is worth the time and effort involved.
And while this type of job may sound great on
the surface, in reality these opportunities are
often far from legitimate.
The home-assembly position
advertisement will generally
inform you that you may work
as much or as little as you
would like, and that you
will be paid weekly for your
assembly services. The truth
is that these ads are often
too good to be true. Good as
they may sound, there is
usually one catch. In order
to participate in the
opportunity, you will need
to invest a little more than
just your time. You will
usually be asked to pay a
one-time reimbursable
deposit, consisting of the
shipping and handling fees
for the products you will
assemble or the crafts you
will make, as well as other
fees for various expenses
you are "sure to incur along
the way."
The scam is evident once you make your payment.
Upon receipt of your money, the company will
send you a kit, complete with unclear or
illegible instructions on how to assemble the
product. Oftentimes, these kits are made up of
very tiny pieces that are literally impossible
to assemble. You are then instructed to assemble
a specified number of "units" before sending
them in; however, the number of products that
make up a unit generally goes unspecified. If
somehow you are able to assemble products to
send to the company, you will generally receive
a message back from the assembly company stating
that you haven't met the unit and/or quality
specifications, and because of this, they are
unable to pay you for your work.
These scams are very common over the Internet,
but have also been around for years through mail
ads. When considering assembly positions, it is
important to remember that companies do not
often require home-based individuals to assemble
products, especially through mail order. There
are plenty of legitimate jobs available on the
Internet, so when choosing, look for one that
offers you pay without requiring a fee or
deposit. Remember, if you feel that something
isn't right, you're probably correct.
