Tagging and Pinging
The world of Internet marketing is
becoming more competitive every day.
Webmasters and site owners are spending more
time and energy than ever trying to drive
traffic to their sites. The battle with
the search engine algorithms is never ending
as companies experiment with every SEO trick
they can come up with to climb to the top of
the results page. While new methods of site
promotion and driving traffic are sure to
evolve, there is one method of Internet
marketing that is popular right now.
Utilizing the tag system that is available from a number of blog hosting
services and sites like Technorati, the marketing tool known as tagging and
pinging is a current favorite of Internet marketers. This technique was
originally known as blog and ping, and site owners would write a blog post that
was loaded with keywords. After publishing the blog entry, they would ping the
post with blog directories or with the larger search engines and soon the post
would weave its way out into the web.
Now, as the search engine requirements have grown a little more stringent,
Technorati and other blog rolling sites have created the ability to tag a post.
This gives the author a chance to categorize a post, just like you would in a
social bookmarking site like del.icio.us. When you make a post with the proper
tag and then ping it, the host site or the tag site will categorize the post
according to the tag and you’ll suddenly have site visitors who were looking for
a page just like yours.
One big advantage of utilizing the tagging system is that you don’t have to
worry about watering down the content of your site by loading it with keywords.
In the past, the sites that appeared at the top of the search engines could be
so keyword rich that they were unreadable. Now, with the tag in place, the
author of the site can write quality content without having to worry about
placing keywords in awkward places or phrases just to get a search engine hit.
Marketing methods such as tagging and pinging are improving the quality of web
content as a whole and helping to preserve the integrity of the Internet as a
source of viable information.
With that information in mind, it is important to note that with methods like
tagging and pinging, content does not play as substantial a role in driving
traffic as it once did. While it is still very important, the advent of social
bookmarking sites has taken some of the pressure off of content placement and
put more of the focus on the construction of inbound links. If you were to
create two identical sites and paste the same content but allowed one to draw
traffic just through the SEO and utilized a tag and ping strategy with the
other, you would find that the tag and ping site becomes established more
quickly. Because of the number of inbound links and hits, it will find it’s way
to the top of the search engine list more quickly.
