There are two
things that never change about computers. First, they will always become
obsolete by the time you get them home, and second, they will always break down
on you. Sadly, for the consumer, there is little they can do when a computer
breaks down. It is far too complicated for them to begin working with it to
repair it. Thankfully for you, that means they will be contacting you so that
you can get fix it for them and get them back on track. Computers are incredibly
important in our present society, and they are only going to get more important,
so you can expect a lot of business as a computer repair service business.
The Concept
If you like computers, and you know how they
work, then this is a great job for you. Your
career and business will consist of
repairing computers all day long. You will
be seen as a guru by those you repair
computers for and you will get paid very
well for it.
To have a computer repair service, you are
going to need training. This can come in the
form of a computer degree, or simply
learning what you can from books. On top of
that, you need to be constantly updated with
what new changes are happening in the
computer industry, and there will be lots of
them.
It can also be a stressful career to have as
you struggle with the multitude of problems
that computers can come up with. One survey
showed that Information Technology
Professionals have the most stressful career
in the world. This is because they are only
contacted when something goes wrong, they
are under constant pressure from clients,
and computers always break down, so the
workload never ends.
On the flip side of that, you can get paid
very well for fixing a computer when someone
is in a bind, and as long as computers
breakdown, you will be there to fix them. It
is simply the industry that keeps on giving.
Startup Costs
Factoring in your education and the books
you need to learn on, you can expect to pay
$30,000 for your career. If you already have
an education, then the startup costs come
down to getting the tools you need to repair
computers, and the software that can help
you. This means you can expect to pay about
$2,000 to $5,000 in some cases, less in
others.
How to Market It
Everyone needs help with their computer, so
advertising in the newspaper and on the
radio is key. Make sure you also put
yourself in the phone book. People will look
in the phone book when their computer breaks
down, and you want it to be your name that
they see. While word of mouth is very
important to your marketing plan, so to is
having a website for people to visit when
they are in trouble with their computer. Now
it may seem odd that they would go on the
internet when they are having trouble with
their computer, but don’t forget that they
can use other computers to look you up.
