Florist Business

Start a Career as a Florist

Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Christmas. These four days are enough to keep a florist business up and going. Four days out of 365 make up the bulk of the florist business, making it one of the most profitable you can have. Of course, that is not even taking into consideration anniversaries, get well baskets, birthdays and weddings.

As a result, when you start a florist business, you are in for a wild ride of keeping up with floral trends and providing floral arrangements to people for everything from saying Thank You to saying I’m Sorry. It is not the easiest business to have, but it can be one of the most profitable for an individual.

The Concept

The concept of a florist business is pretty straightforward. When someone needs flowers, for whatever reason, they come to you. As a result, you need to have a lot of flowers ready to go and you have to know how to maintain them. You need to also be online or in a location that makes it easy for people to come to you with their flower needs. It is best to have knowledge of flowers, and you need to be able to understand how arrangements go together and how to keep flowers from dying.

It is not the easiest job to have because you need to have such a large supply of flowers, and such a wide knowledge of flowers, but it can be a very rewarding business nonetheless. While it is rewarding financially, it is rewarding in another way, and that comes in helping people give a gift that means a lot. When you sell someone roses that they can give to their wife, or a tulip for a mother, you are making the world a brighter and more colorful place. Of course, spending all day around flowers is a great way to spend your working hours, no matter who you are.

Startup Costs

While this is a rewarding job, it is a very costly one. You will need to have a storefront, as well as a large supply of flowers that needs to be constantly updated. You can expect your costs to be as high as $50,000 for this startup business as a result. Unlike many startups, this one is very expensive and not for everyone. Make sure you have a large savings before you attempt to start a florist business.

Marketing your Internet BusinessHow to Market It

The best way to market this is by attending bridal shows for one thing, and getting your name out to people thinking of planning a wedding. As well, advertise in the paper as much as you can. When you advertise in the paper, especially around major holidays, you will be able to get a lot of business from people looking to pick up flowers for that special someone on the big day. Word of mouth helps, as does advertisements on the radio and through billboards. Don’t leave out the Yellow Pages either, and the use of posters at shopping malls and supermarkets should never be discounted.
