Start a Herbalist Business
The use of
herbal remedies to treat a
variety of ailments is the
work of an herbalist. Some
people call it folk or
traditional medicine and it
is a viable alternative to
conventional medical
treatments. While popular
for centuries (if not
millennia), it is now
gaining wide popularity with
mainstream society as people
are more intent on living
simpler healthier lives free
of the chemicals that so
many doctors prescribe.
The Concept
When you're working as an
herbalist, most people will
see you as an alternative or
holistic practitioner. What
this means for you as a
home-based business owner is
that you'll have to work
with your clients either in
their home or office, or
have them come to your home.
If you want to operate your
business in your home,
you'll have to have room for
all your jars and containers
of the different plants and
minerals, you'll need an
area specifically dedicated
to you work. Not only do you
need storage space for your
wares, but you'll need to
keep your materials well
organized, and keep detailed
records on all of your
clients. Also keep in mind
that some of the herbal
ingredients can be toxic if
taken in the wrong
combinations, or simply by
taking too much. Belladonna
is one example. When taken
in small doses it is a mild
sedative. But, if too much
is taken, it's a poison!
Some mushrooms and fungi are
excellent for treating
depression and other
ailments, but too much can
have effects similar to
those of an illicit drug
like LSD.
Startup Costs
Getting started as an
herbalist can be pretty
expensive. As mentioned
above, there are plants, and
minerals to be used in the
treatments you prescribe.
Some dried plant can simply
be hung up or laid out on a
shelf, but many are best
kept in jars or other
containers. Not only does
that keep them fresh, but
many of them are quite tasty
to insects! Also, you're
going to need some basic
business supplies; a
computer and a printer,
paper, file folders, some
sort of filing cabinet or
drawers, a telephone and
some marketing material like
business cards and
brochures. Of course, some
of these items you probably
already have. Anything that
you can specifically
dedicate to your work can be
used as a tax deduction. As
for education, you can look
into local schools to learn
about herbal remedies. Also,
there are online sites and
schools that offer education
in herbal medicine. You may
also check with your local
herbal apothecary, as they
may offer education in the
use of herbs as well.
How to Market It
When looking to line up
clients, there are several
options open to you. First,
check out any local shops
that sell crystals, herbs
and aromatherapy candles.
Talk to the owner about you
putting up flyers and/or
leaving your business cards
there. Also, you can ask
about coming in to do a free
seminar on what you can
offer to people. Many
businesses love this, as it
brings people into their
shop. Next, see about
creating a website. A domain
name can be bought for very
little money, and it's very
simple to set up. You can
even hire a freelancer to
write articles and text for
your site to place it higher
on search engines, this way
when customers search for
your type of business,
you'll come up on top.
