Owners and operators of countless small
businesses and specialty shops have been
feeling the sting of big box retailers who
rob their customer base with discount
pricing and massive inventories. Many of
these small businesses have discovered a
tool that allows them to expand their market
coverage without adding a lot of additional
overhead. By setting up an eBay store, the
businesses are able to sell to a customer
base that literally spans the globe. Not
only has the eBay store become a viable part
of many small businesses, for some it now
represents almost the entirety of their
income.
Opening an eBay store is different than just
signing up for a basic eBay account and
putting up your grandmother’s old dishes for
auction. While the principle is largely the
same, there are a few additional steps that
you need to take. In addition to setting up
a basic seller’s account, you need verify
your identity and integrity before you can
open your store. eBay requires that you have
a feedback score of at least 20. This score
is determined by the rankings that your
previous customers have given you based on
the level of service that you provided. If
you are new to eBay and have no verified
seller history, then you’ll need to pay a $5
ID verification fee. This can be avoided if
you can demonstrate that you have a PayPal
account that is in good standing. As long as
you can provide one of the those three
things, then you are ready to go!
There are four basic steps involved in
setting up an eBay store. The first step is
to build and customize your store. There are
quite a few tools provided by eBay that you
can use to make build a brand and make your
store stand out. Utilize these tools in a
way that makes your store easy to navigate
and shop.
The second step is to manage your store and
your listings. Obviously, this will be an
ongoing process, but when you are first
getting set up it will be step two. You
can’t open your store for business until you
have products listed to sell. In this step
you will develop your product lists and
create categories for them so that your
customers have an easier time finding what
they are looking for.
The third step is to promote your store.
Through a series of steps and tools provided
by eBay, you can increase the customer
traffic in your store. Though you may want
to do some additional advertising, eBay
provides you with everything from sales
incentives to help managing search engine
keywords that will point potential customers
to your store.
The last step is to track your success. Once
you’ve nailed down the first three steps and
your business wheels are beginning to spin,
you can utilize eBay’s tracking tools to
analyze your sales trends, overall
productivity and traffic patterns. Use this
information to hone your business and
further increase your profitability.
