Website Building Channel: How to Register a Domain Name

Registering your own dot com or net is an easy process. The first step, obviously, is to choose a domain name. You may need to think of more than one domain name because you'll find that many good domain names have already been taken. So grab a piece of paper or open a blank notepad on your computer and start brainstorming different domain names for your home business website. It's best to list about 10-15 potential domain names just in case.

The next step is to choose where you would like to register your domain name. There are literally thousands and thousands of domain registration services online, so you'll want to do some research on these services.

A great tip when registering your domain name with a particular company is to see whether they offer private domain name registration. Otherwise, the general public can search online by typing ?who is? + the domain name and see the name, address, and phone number that were used when the domain was registered.

After you have located a domain name registration service online it's time to find out if the name you want is available. Start by typing in your first choice. If that domain name is already taken, the program will tell you so, and may offer alternative ideas, such as that domain name + .net or .org, or similar names. Keep trying names until you are told that the name is available.

The Domain Name is Available!

If you come across a domain name that you do like and it is available, go ahead and register it now. Don't wait until next month to register the name because chances are that someone else may buy that domain name, so you should act quickly.

Normally when registering a domain name all you do is enter your billing address, first and last name, and credit card information. You will be asked how long you would like to keep your domain name. It is best to register a new domain name for at least two years, but this option is entirely up to you.

Once you have entered your payment details and registration details you have officially registered a domain name.

Now that you have registered a domain name it's time to find web hosting. Get tips on how to find a good web host provider here.
