Start a Kids Carpool Service Business
A long time
ago, when dads were the
bread-winners and moms
stayed at home, it wasn't
unusual to see moms waiting
for their children after
school or driving them back
and forth to football or
band practice. However, we
now live in a world where
both parents are often
working; we have
unbelievable gas prices;
people are trying to become
more environmentally
friendly and the kids still
have after school
activities. The main problem
-- How do we get the kids to
football or band practice?
The answer is a kids'
carpool service!
The Concept
The work of a kid's
carpool service is very
simple. You simply pick up
the children and drop them
off at the location of their
activity, or at home,
according to whatever the
parent has arranged. It's
similar to what a bus driver
does, but with different
hours. You will need to be
very organized so that you
can arrange your schedule
according to the activities
of the children on a
particular day and in such a
way that you aren't wasting
fuel in the vehicle by
driving from one end of town
to the other repeatedly.
You'll also need to
determine your costs so that
you can decide how much you
will charge in order to make
a profit. The key is to
charge the parents enough to
make a good income, but not
so much that your service
becomes out of reach to
them. One way to do this is
to operate at as low a cost
as possible. You can figure
this out simply by saving
your fuel receipts and then
doing some basic
calculations to see how much
you are actually spending
per child and then find ways
to save.
Startup Costs
Costs for a venture such
as this would be minimal, a
large writing board,
markers, paper for printing
of the schedules, computer,
printer and the like. Most
of the cost would go toward
gas, assuming you'd be using
the vehicle you already have
for the service. If you plan
on purchasing a larger
vehicle, such as a van, then
the cost could rise
substantially.
How to Market It
Most of the marketing
would be done in-house, for
example, within the school
district at PTA meetings.
Print flyers to send home
with the students. This way
when the parents get the
child's homework and other
papers they will see your
flyer as well. You can do
this with the help of the
school principal. Be sure to
point out the benefits of
your service, such as having
a responsible parent present
to escort the children, the
fact that the parents will
not be having to take time
off from work, thus making
their employers happy, and
that it is environmentally
friendly. One vehicle taking
six children produces fewer
pollutants than six vehicles
each taking one child.
