Locksmith Business

Start a Career as a Locksmith

At some point, in everyone’s life, we all lock our keys in the house or in the car, and that means calling the locksmith. So, why call the locksmith when you can be the locksmith yourself? It would seem this would be a better way to do things, because now you have all the tools to get into your car or home when you lock yourself out, and you can profit off the mistakes of other people. It is a relatively easy business to get into, and all you need is the know-how to open locks and the tools to do so.

The Concept

Starting a locksmith business involves knowing how locks work. Thankfully, while you can take some courses, using nothing but a library card, you can learn exactly how to do your job. Now, one of the best things you can do is work with a locksmith, kind of like an apprentice, for awhile so you can learn how to do everything you will need to do, while being paid at it.

Locksmiths have to be on call 24/7. People lock their keys in their car at 3 p.m. and 3 a.m., so you need to be committed to getting up and going out, even when you do not want to. The business only comes in when people lock themselves out, and when they do, they want to know the person on the other end of the phone is going to be reliable and there for them when they make that mistake.

One of the great things about being a locksmith, is that to learn how to do things, all you have to do is lock your keys in the car, and then learn how to get them out.
Of course, locksmiths do not only open vehicles and doors for people, they also change locks, and that can be a lot of steady business as well. When people move out, or move in, they often want new locks, and all it takes is a call to you so you can change the locks for them.

Startup Costs

Costs are only related to the equipment, which will run about $500 to $1,000 depending on how elaborate you get. You can have some locks on hand for when you need to change locks, and having that supply will be about $200 to $500. Other than those costs, and the costs of learning how to open cars and change locks, it is quite cheap to start up this kind of business.

Marketing your Internet BusinessHow to Market It

There are two primary ways to market this business. One is through the newspaper/radio, and the other is through the Yellow Pages. When you are a locksmith, and someone locks their keys in their car, they are going to call someone and if you are AAA Locksmith, you will be the first one they call. Make sure you are on the top of their mind, because when they lock their keys in the house or car, cost is not an object, but getting someone to their location is.
