Make-Up Artist Business

When you have a talent at make-up application, it can be highly beneficial to start your own make-up artist business. Anyone who enjoys this type of work can start by organizing to provide make-up for your local high school’s prom goers, and work from there.

This type of make-up artist business can earn you a nice sum of money especially if you become a make-up artist for weddings. Another kind of make-up artist is for film and television doing special effects or working on set, doing the actors’ make-up.

A make-up artist business will have to be decided on one of these two types of artistry. To do special occasions like weddings you can start your own business by advertising in bridal magazines and online bridal websites. If you live in the United States you will need to go to Cosmetology school or take an Esthetician course. You will need to obtain a State Board license before ever working on clients. Finding a Cosmetology school is easy and usually these classes are offered at your local community college or at trade school.

To start in special effects make-up artist business, you should become a freelancer and send your portfolio to different production companies. A lot of independent filmmakers hire freelance crew. You can also do a specialized course that will teach you how to do different techniques like aging, and coloring.

You will not need large capital to start your make-up artist business, just money for advertising and your makeup. To cut costs, you can often find websites and magazines that will list your services. You might need capital for your portfolio as well, but you should practice your make-up styles on friends and photograph them to use. All you will need is a friend with a digital camera. Other equipment you will need is your choice of make-up including: foundation, different color pencils, shadows, mascara, blusher and more.

So, if you want to start your own make-up artist business, you should start practicing today, obtain a State Board license and work on your portfolio. You can get most of your clients by word of mouth. Good luck!
