Do you have a
love of music and want others to catch that musical fever you have? Well, one of
the best jobs for you may be that of a music instructor. As a music
instructor, your job will be to teach others about the beauty of music. You will
be able to teach them on a variety of instruments, and you never know, you could
be teaching the next Beethoven or Paul McCartney. To have this type of career,
you need to have a heavy musical background, as well as an ability to teach
others what you know, from scratch. While not always the most profitable type of
business, it is easily one of the most rewarding.
The Concept
As a music instructor, you will be teaching
others, both adults and children, how to
play instruments. This means you need to be
able to play everything from the guitar and
piano to the harp and flute. You need to
have an extensive background in music,
preferably a degree, and you need to be able
to teach. This seems like a lot to have to
simply teach someone the chords of the
guitar, but to do it right you need as much
background as you can get.
Typically, as a music instructor, you will
work with children, sometimes at schools, in
an effort to give them the love of music.
You may need to have your own facility where
children can come to learn about music, or
you may have them come to your home. Another
option is to go to the home of client’s to
teach them in their own home how to use the
instruments.
Naturally, with your background in music,
you are most likely going to have a love for
it, and your love for music is key in making
sure you enjoy what you do. There will be
times where you are frustrated with a
student’s inability to learn how to play the
flute, or any other instrument, but you need
to be calm and collected. Patience is an
important part of being a music instructor.
Startup Costs
Depending how you go about it, startup costs
can range from $100 to $10,000. If you buy
all the instruments you are going to teach
on, and have a facility to teach children
and adults in, then you can expect to pay
upwards of $10,000. If you are simply going
to let the children learn on their own
pieces of equipment, then you can expect to
pay much, much less. Also, it would help
greatly if you had a background in music, so
getting a Degree in Music would help a lot,
but this will increase the startup cost of
your business by about $20,000 to $30,000.
How to Market It
You want to market this anywhere people who
love music will go. In other words, market
it absolutely everywhere. Put up flyers at
the supermarket, near schools, as well as
advertising in the paper to ensure you get a
blanket of advertising that will bring in
the business you are looking for.
