Become a Podcaster and Start a
Podcasting Business
Podcasts are
all the rage at the moment and this trend doesn’t seem like it’s going to die
out anytime soon, making this internet business a great business idea to
start. First and foremost, you may be wondering what the heck a podcast is. Is
that a yes? Well, according to Wikipedia a podcast is a series of digital-media
files which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for
playback on portable media players and computers. In plain English, a podcast
simply means a radio show via the Internet and the ability for anyone to listen
in on your show at anytime of day from virtually anywhere in the world.
The Concept
When starting your podcast business you
should really zone in on a particular topic
to talk about. For instance, you can have a
podcast that talks all about haunted houses
and paranormal activity. You could then
invite guest speakers to talk about their
latest findings on a particular haunted
house or sightings that they have had. You
don’t necessarily have to cover a topic like
the haunted house example, but having a
specific topic or being in one particular
niche will help you narrow down your
audience and in turn produce more profits
for your business.
So, starting a podcast sounds great doesn’t
it? But, I bet you are wondering how the
heck you will earn a living from producing a
podcast. Well, there are several ways to
earn an income from podcasting. Some
examples of how you can earn income are:
- Charging a subscription rate to listen in
on your show
- Obtaining commercial sponsorships
- Donations
- Advertising via your Web pages
- Selling your own product(s) related to the
topic and niche you are in
Startup Costs
Starting up your very own podcast can cost
anywhere from dirt cheap to really expensive
depending on the quality of equipment you
purchase. On the cheap side of things you
can purchase a head set for under $40 bucks
at your local Target and sign up for free
podcast hosting service. But, just remember,
if you do go this route in starting your
podcast business, your business will not
look very professional and it may be very
hard to attract high rolling sponsors to
your show . What you ultimately want IS to
attract high rollers so that they can be
your bread and butter and yes, pay your
bills, and then some.
How to Market It
Marketing your podcast is not as simple as
doing some SEO on your website or
advertising via Google Adwords. To make your
podcast go, go, go, you will want to capture
the Medias attention as well as the hearts
and ears of listeners. Meaning, do press
releases, hire a publicists, and above all…
make a DARN GOOD show! If your show kicks
butt people will talk about it and your show
will spread over the Internet like wild
fire!
