Do you have one of those deep, booming
voices that people love? Is your voice
calm and seductive? If so, then perhaps you
should look into starting up your own
professional voice-over service.
A professional voice-over service is a
business where you spend your time, simply
talking. You will be hired, or that is to
say your business will be contracted, to
provide your voice over commercials, films
and radio programs. If you like to talk,
have a great voice and like making great
money, then this is the career for you.
The Concept
Whenever you hear someone talking on a car
commercial, or whenever you hear someone
talking on a radio commercial, then you are
most likely listening to someone who has a
career as a professional voice-over
specialist. It may be through their own
company, or it may be through a larger
corporation.
Either way, for those who love to talk and
have a great voice, then this is the job
that works perfect for them. They are able
to make great money by simply saying what
others want them to say. Of course, it is
not as simple as simply walking in and
pitching your services. You do need training
in it, and that means training your voice.
Thankfully, this does not mean going to
school, but simply a voice coach.
Once you get into this career, you will have
one of those careers that people dream
about. You will make good money and all you
have to do is talk. You can’t beat that.
Startup Costs
Startup costs for this stem mainly from
going to a voice coach to fine tune your
voice, its pitch and its variations. Your
most important tool is your voice in this
business, so you don’t have to worry about
buying a new one. It came with you and it is
free. Other costs will be related to
marketing your company and setting up a
website for it.
If you want to go a bit farther with it, you
can actually setup a recording studio in
your own house, where you can record what
your clients want from the comfort of your
own home. Doing this will take your startup
costs from around $1,000 to $2,000, to about
$10,000 to $15,000. However, it may be worth
it in terms of providing professional
services your clients will appreciate.
How to Market It
The best way to market this is to go to your
core client sectors: radio, television and
movies. You will want to make good contacts
with individuals in these types of fields.
In terms of radio and television, you will
want to contract yourself out to a marketing
firm so they will have you on file when they
are going to be needing your type of voice
for voice-over work. With movies, there is a
bit harder to get into, but if you can get
work providing voices for animated
characters, or dubbing, then your business
will become incredibly successful as a
result.
