Quickly, what is a publicist? Most likely
you have heard of it, can even maybe name a
publicist, but for the life of you, you
can’t state exactly what it is that they do.
This is good news for a publicist because a
lack of knowledge from the public about what
a certain job is, the more they will think
they need it when the time comes.
A publicist is essentially someone whose job
it is to generate and manage the publicity
of someone, usually a celebrity. Typically,
they will work for large companies and have
multiple clients. Depending on how good you
are at it, and where you are located, you
can pull in $3,000 to $50,000 per month, per
client.
The Concept
Publicists are the ones who get press
coverage for their clients. They help those
who want to become famous, become famous,
and they help those who are already famous,
project the image that they want to the
public. They deal with a wide variety of
clients in fields as diverse as business and
politics to sports and entertainment.
Publicists have to be skilled in a lot of
different areas. They have to be able to
write press releases, create packets of
information, take photographs, distribute
the information, as well as talk to
journalists, clients and influential
individuals to help their client become the
next famous face, or help them get that job,
movie or deal they are looking for.
Even when a client gets poor press coverage,
a publicist is there to minimize the damage
on the person’s reputation and turn the
scandal to the advantage of the client
Startup Costs
To get hired on by a public relations firm,
you will need to go to school for a degree
in public relations. This will cost several
thousands of dollars and take a few years of
your time. However, after you get out of
school you will have plenty of opportunities
at various firms to get your chance at being
a big-time publicist.
If you decide to startup your own public
relations firm, then you have your work cut
out for you. Not only do you have to get
yourself an office and the clothes and
merchandise to make you look like a player
on the celebrity scene, you also have to get
gifts and other incentives to help garner
new clients for your firm. It is an up hill
battle and many public relations firms fall
flat within a few years. However,
determination will help you make it, so
stick to it.
How to Market It
When you start a public relations firm and
work as a publicist, you are going to have
to market the heck out of your business. You
will have to go to night clubs to introduce
yourself to celebrities, you will have to
associate with talent agents and you will
have to hound some people to convince them
to be a client. There is no putting posters
up at the department store in this career,
it is all about you. You are the best
marketing tool that you have available so
get your face out there and get in the face
of those you want as clients. Once they see
how determined you are and what you can
offer them, the word of mouth will travel
fast.
