Starting a Baby Sign Language Home Business

Start a Baby Sign Language Business

There is a common misconception through the baby world that babies are unable to understand language. However, this is far from the truth. In fact, while babies have not mastered the verbal language, they have in fact learned the universal language of body language. As a result, one of the newest and hottest trends in small business is creating a baby sign language business.

The Concept

This type of business has several benefits to it. First, most parents do not know how to sign, and to speak to their baby they need to learn. As well, babies are constantly being born, so as long as there is a market for parents wanting to speak to their children, through sign language, there will be a market for your business.

Studies have found that babies as young as six months can begin to tell their parents that they want something to drink, or that they need to be changed, simply through sign language.

Babies understand speech at six months of age, and all you are doing with sign language is helping bridge the gap so that the baby can communicate with their parent. Babies have an astonishing ability to accumulate new knowledge as their brain grows exponentially, so why not help parents speak to their children before they ever learn to verbally speak?

Startup Costs

The beautiful part about staring a baby sign language business is that you can actually save hugely on costs. If you already know sign language, you are 90 percent of the way there. Otherwise, you will have to take a course on sign language, and depending where you are, it could run a few hundred dollars. The only other cost you need to worry about when you startup a baby sign language business, is advertising.

If you live in a small urban center, the ads in the paper may run a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Other than that, advertising through posters and word of mouth is a very cheap way to get your company’s name out.

Marketing your Internet BusinessHow to Market It

With a baby sign language business, the marketing is nearly done for you. When you tell parents they can speak to their child at only six months of age, using sign language, most are going to jump at the chance.

Therefore, it is important that when you decide to start a baby sign language business that you market the fact parents can speak to their children. Posters and ads that state “Got a New Born? Want to know what they say? Call….” are great ways to market your business. It is such an innovative market that the sheer fact you are teaching parents to sign to their babies, is enough to market the business itself.

Try and visit places where moms and their babies will be, including parks, supermarkets and churches. Put some posters up at Lamaze classes as well, so you can have the next crop of baby signers already signed up to teach. You can also hold group classes on how to sign to your baby. This will keep your costs down, while using the size of the group to bring in large revenue, and create a great deal of word of mouth.
