If you go out and ask someone what a
notary is, they will tell you they have
heard of it but don’t actually know what
they do. However, despite this seemingly
obscure attitude, notaries are always in
demand and becoming one is a sure step
towards financial success for your small
business. Notary service providers serve as
the witness in the signing of important
documents that include real estate
transactions, insurance, marriage and
divorce papers, as well as professional
letters. Many businesses will search out
their services as a result, and the notary
service provider can always expect to be in
demand.
The Concept
If there is an important document to be
signed, then the notary is the one to do it.
However, depending on the state you are in,
the notary can do many other things as well.
They can administer oaths and statutory
declarations on top of their duties in
authenticating documents.
Like a funeral director who will always stay
in business, a notary can always expect to
be signing documents or administering oaths
to someone. It is the business that just
keeps on giving.
Startup Costs
The biggest start up cost, since you can be
a notary out of your own home, is doing the
notary exam. This will vary depending on
what state you are in, this can range form a
few hundred dollars to a few thousand
dollars to start. As well, if you decide to
have your own shop, which looks much more
professional, than you are going to end up
paying more in startup costs. Initial
startup costs for a notary service business
can be $10,000 to $25,000, which means there
is a lot of flexibility depending on if you
do it full-time or part-time, if you choose
to have a shop or do it form home, and which
state you live in and how many fees you can
expect to pay.
How to Market It
If you have a notary service business, then
there are two main places you should take
your business cards without question; the
lawyer’s office and real estate offices. You
are going to be doing a lot of leg work
initially as you go to nearly every lawyer
office and real estate office in your town
or city. These two entities may already have
their own notaries, or they may be in need
for a new one, but they will always need
them so don’t be afraid to drop off your
business cards.
You can also stop by government offices and
see if they need a notary who can witness
their document signings and administer
oaths. It would not hurt to advertise in the
paper either, or set up a few posters in the
downtown business district of your local
town or city. Stop in at all the insurance
agencies in your town or city and drop off
your business card as well, since they are
constantly in need of notaries. You are a
part of a unique business when you own a
notary service business, so play it up and
show those you meet why your company serves
such an important part in the community.
